Abuse

"If someone harms a child, it would be better for him if instead he were hanged about his neck with a millstone and drowned in the depths of the sea."

          Dean Koontz, The Silent Corner

Did you know that surviving severe childhood trauma makes you 3,100% more likely to attempt suicide as an adult?  The good news is that it only takes ONE loving and supportive relationship in a young child's life to make all the difference in how they heal.  That person could be a parent, teacher, scout leader, pastor or youth group leader - properly vetted of course, since unfortunately, some of those should-be rold models turn out to be the violator.  It is also unfortunate that so many children in foster care are being treated as horribly - or more horribly - than they were in the home they were removed from.

There is also another situation that falls under this category - one that is gaining more attention as adults who were victimized as children are coming forward - and that is sexual abuse and trafficking. The course of this nightmare runs deep and wide in this country and around the world, more than anyone could ever have imagined. According to The International Labour Organization, there are approximately 40.3 million victims of human trafficking globally. And those numbers don't even take into account the abuse by religious leaders and parents or other family members against their own children (incest).
